Information Infrastructure of Beijing Historical Space - Using Google Earth and Complete Map of Peking, Qianlong Period

This paper describes the digitization and utilization of Complete Map of Peking, Qianlong Period, which is the oldest measured map of Beijing made about 250 years ago. We first proposed the geometric correction method called “linepreserving distance weighting method” to preserve linear features relevant in the old map of cities. Next we improved the reliability of the old map as information infrastructure by correcting problems discovered in the old map; namely by editing the wrong arrangement of old maps in the south-west regions, and by totally surveying place names on the old map to reconstruct the index. Finally we discuss the direction of research for establishing the information infrastructure of Beijing historical space through the integration of old photographs and the development of a participatory system.
